Chakraspiration-last week's Workshop at Ramapo College of NJ

Twisted 1/2 Moon Pose/Parivrtta Ardha Chandrasana variation

Last weekend I led the Chakras teaching for Ramapo College of NJ's 200hr Yoga Teacher Training. This teaching was open to drop in students and we dove deep into our understanding of the chakras. I've posted this blog so you could have a little insight into chakra wisdom and so the attendees would have some basic online notes. Before I get to the chakras, I have 2 more teachings scheduled this October at the Krame Center at Ramapo College of NJ.

 CHAKRAspiration

Chakras is a Sanskrit word which means wheels of light. We have many energy centers within our body yet there are 7 major energy centers you may find interesting to know about. These centers allow for a smooth flow of energy to move through you. When a chakra is blocked disease follows. When your chakras are open you experience good health.

Muladhara means root support. It is the 1st chakra found at the base of the pelvis. It is red in color and its mantra is LAM. It is associated with our feelings about our home, family and money. To open this survival chakra you must ground yourself. Take off your shoes and socks, stand barefoot on the earth and take 3 deep breaths. Notice how you feel.

Svadhisthana means the sweet abode of self. It is the 2nd chakra found within the reproductive body. It is orange in color and its mantra is VAM. This chakra deals with sensuality and creativity. You need to have a healthy attitude towards yourself to balance this center. Once you love your body the 2nd chakra opens up. Here you will feel confident. This confidence will deepen your relationships and encourage you to share whatever it is you create.

Manipura means the city of the shining jewel. It is the 3rd chakra found around your navel. It is yellow in color and its mantra is RAM. This chakra governs your identity. Where you say "I am this" and "I am that." It's your power center. How to open it is to meditate and pay attention to your gut. You have a mini brain in there called your intuition. Does it say yes or no?

Anahata means the sound of two things not hitting each other. It is the 4th chakra found within the center of your chest and in-between your shoulder blades. It is green in color and its mantra is YAM. This is the "I love" chakra. To open your heart to love you must first love yourself. Plenty of self care like eating well, exercising, sleep and doing what you love are acts of self love. Once you have self love as a regular practice you can then have a full well to give love and serve others.

Vishuddha means pure. It is the 5th chakra found within your throat. It is blue in color and its mantra is HAM. This chakra is associated with communication. To open this chakra you must be impeccable with your words. Say no when you feel no and yes when you feel yes. Say positive affirmations like "I can do this!" "I can do that!" Also there's a time to listen and not speak. All of this will help you heal and balance your throat chakra.

Ajna means to know or to perceive. It is the 6th chakra and is found within the center of our eyebrows. It is purple in color and its mantra is OM. Also known as our 3rd eye, this chakra is associated with our intuition and imagination. This chakra opens when you question your reality. When you open your 3rd eye you see the many illusions of this world that trick you to buy this or do that. A good mantra to repeat to keep this center open is "Know Thyself" This will remind you to feel out everything and use your discernment when it comes to decision making.

Sahasrara means a 1,000 petaled lotus. It is the 7th chakra found at the crown of the head. It is white in color and its mantra is OM. This chakra connects us to the spiritual realm. Connecting to this center means detaching from this 3D realm and going 5D. A good way to do this is to retreat to the mountains, jump in the ocean or something closer to home like take a salt bath. When you open this center you are all about discovering the truth about everything. A sense of interconnection to everything in the universe moves through you.

I hope you enjoyed these notes! See you on the mat!

3 Opportunities in October to Dive Deeper into your Yoga Studies with me at Ramapo College of New Jersey

Compass Pose/Parivrtta Surya Yantrasana

Yoga is so much more than taking your leg and putting it over your shoulder like I'm pictured here in compass pose. I almost didn't post this picture because I thought it would intimidate. However I remembered how good I felt when I took this selfie. I took this picture after practicing yoga alone and creating my October choreography for my classes. At this moment my heart was wide open while I felt equally grounded and content. This reminds me of a beloved teacher, Dharma Mittra who shared that he took selfies of himself in postures long before there were iPhones. He only shared the pictures where he remembers connecting to his highest self while in the poses. A moment where judgment doesn't exist, just love. Dharma Mittra created the famous poster called the Master Chart of 908 Asanas which hangs in countless yoga school walls.

Practicing yoga is a multilayered experience where so much is processed and it's never the same practice. If you are looking to go deeper in your study, this month I am teaching 3 special workshop classes at Ramapo College of New Jersey. These 3 workshops are part of Ramapo College's 200 hour Yoga Teacher Training. Since the topics I'm leading are popular my teachings are available for you to drop into at the Krame Center on campus for $35 a workshop. Below are the workshops, their dates and times with descriptions. Please bring a yoga mat and wear comfortable clothing to move in. Also please visit www.ramapo.edu for more information.

Friday   October 11th   from 6pm-9pm   Chakras

Chakras means energetic wheels of light. In ancient India it was realized that there are energy centers within the body. These energy centers are responsible for letting a smooth flow of energy to move throughout your body. When they are blocked you can experience disease. When they are open and balanced good health ensues. In this workshop you will learn how to open the 7 chakras, how to balance them and the science of the chakras. This workshop is 1/2 lecture and 1/2 easy to follow yoga and meditation practice. Please bring a yoga mat and wear comfortable clothes to move in.

Saturday   October 19th   from 2pm-6pm   Vinyasa Yoga Workshop- How to Create a Class

Vinyasa is a style of yoga characterized by stringing postures together so that you move from one pose to another seamlessly using breath. It is commonly referred to as flow yoga. Vinyasa flow style classes offers a variety of postures and no two classes are ever exactly alike. As yoga has grown in popularity, Vinyasa yoga has been successful because it reaches a wide variety of levels who can benefit from either a slow, medium or a fast flow. The challenge is being the teacher who continuously comes up with safe and innovative flows, that stay true to classical yoga and keep people coming back for more.

    In this workshop:

I will share and we will create sequences that have purpose.

Examine the nature of the postures selected in the sequence.

Understand why the postures in the sequence work well together.

     Refine and balance our sequences.

Discuss how to notice the tempo that's best for your students.

Please bring a yoga mat and wear comfortable clothes to move in.

Friday   October 25th   from 6pm-9pm   Bandhas-Our Energetic Locks

Bandhas means locks. More specifically the energetic locks that can be found within our body by controlling our breath. According to yoga we have several locks within our body we can contract to not let our energy spill out while we hold a pose and breathe in it. The benefit of having bandhas wisdom is that you will be able to hold poses and breathe in them longer, jump to the top of your mat from downward facing dog with little to no sound as well as be supported by your hands on the floor in downward facing dog and in arm balances without having your wrists and hands hurt. In this workshop you will learn how and when to use your bandhas while practicing yoga and meditation. This workshop is 1/2 lecture and 1/2 easy to follow yoga and meditation practice. Please bring a yoga mat and wear comfortable clothes to move in.

Remembrance Day at Englewood Hospital and Medical Center- Remembering the Pregnancy/Infant that Left Us

Sunday October 6th from 2pm-4pm at Englewood Hospital and Medical Center in Englewood, New Jersey there is a very special event called Remembrance Day. Remembrance Day honors the memory of a miscarriage, a stillborn, the baby that did not stay with us. If you or someone you know needs a dose of healing and community regarding this topic please consider joining us this coming Sunday. The Remembrance Day event consists of music, art, meditation, sharing your experience if you wish and lighting a candle to memorialize your pregnancy/infant loss.

I will be leading the meditation and mudra making (hand yoga) portion of this event. I have been a part of this event for the past two years. Although I feel like I've accepted the loss of my last child, I find that when I'm at the Remembrance Day event and leave the event a great sense of love, understanding and another layer of healing moves through me.

If you can't make Sunday's event please know there are ongoing meetings at Englewood Hospital and Medical Center regarding pregnancy/infant loss.

Open Your 3rd Eye notes from last week's Yoga Study Circle at Birchwood Center

Sunning my 3rd Eye in Tip Toe Pose during the golden hour.

Last week I led the Yoga Study Circle at Birchwood Center in Nyack, New York. Here we focused on Opening Our 3rd Eyes. During the circle I shared plenty but I felt to share a few online notes so you could have a couple of lifestyle tips to refer to that will encourage that purple 3rd eye light of yours to shine bright and stay open.

Find the sun. The 3rd eye is light sensitive. Go into the sun and gaze into it. A good time to do that so you don't harm your eyes is during the golden hour right before the sun sets. Even if it's cold outside, find the sun. The sun is life and will energetically move through all the layers you wear during those cold winter days.

Question everything before accepting. You need to question everything you see, everything you read and hear. So much of what we are told is to limit us, to slow us down and get us to buy this and do that. Be inquisitive and use your discernment. Ask yourself "Does it feel right or wrong?"

Read to expand your mind. Read articles and books that don't trash talk but are written to expand your consciousness. When you sit in a state of not knowing everything and approach things with curiosity your 3rd eye is opens.

Surround yourself with people who you believe are high conscious beings. That's how you learn and grow. When you are around people with high level consciousness you start to open up. Find and hang out with free thinkers that can guide you to the next level of consciousness.

Meditation and Yoga will open your 3rd eye. Meditation and Yoga is the art of absorbing yourself in the present moment. It gives you increased foresight. You will develop clairvoyance, the ability to see things before they happen. clairaudience, the ability to hear things deeper than before and possibly clairsentience, the ability to feel deeply.

There's so much more to opening your 3rd eye but I hope this helps you feel inspired to go deeper down your path to learning and healing with yoga's wisdom.

Please visit www.birchwoodcenter.com for their next Yoga Study Circle offering and much more!

Open Your 3rd Eye-Yoga Study Circle at Birchwood Center

The 3rd Eye also known as Ajna Chakra is the 6th Chakra. It is located in between the eyebrows. It is an energetic center that can be made more powerful through yoga, meditation and other spiritual practices just as a muscle is. While a person's two eyes sees the physical world, the 3rd eye is believed to connect you to your intuition, give you the ability to communicate with the world with greater understanding and reveal insights about the past and future.

Friday September 20th at 7pm-8:30pm I will be leading the Yoga Study Circle at Birchwood Center.  Here we will learn more about the 3rd eye from both an energetic and scientific perspective. We will do a few meditative exercises to strengthen and open it. If you are interested in this special teaching about opening your 3rd eye please visit www.birchwoodcenter.com for more information and to register.

Let Your Breath Guide You- September's Class Schedule

When I sit down on my mat I immediately follow my breath. I imagine it as a guide who is leading me to go deeper. A teacher that encourages me to experience parts of me I never knew existed. Parts of me that are usually tuned at a lower frequency say "Hello Allison, we were waiting for you to notice!" I sense with every single breath there's an internal celebration of every cell as they receive my breath. I feel a wave of peace and healing wash over me. Eventually this use of my imagination seeing my breath as a guide activates a heightened state of observation where mindfulness is fully experienced.

If you are looking to experience mindfulness, heal and whole yourself please join me for class where I will guide you to notice your breath and so much more.

Yoga Playlists

Vasisthasana/One Arm Plank Variation

We miss a lot of the details of life because we have a tendency to go fast. To run through everything . Our yoga practice trains us to go slower and notice what is normally tuned at a lower frequency. Going slowly helps us to cultivate a sensitivity which makes our life experiences much more rich and meaningful.

If you need some ambient music to slow down to, my class playlists are available on
Apple Music. Search my name Allison Egan Datwani or @allisonegandatwani

What I Learned About Forgiveness from Dada J.P. Vaswani

I was raised by church going parents who gave me the complete Catholic education from grade school and into College. Spirituality was always a part of my life whether I understood it or not the virtuous seeds of love, forgiveness, compassion and gratitude were planted deep within my heart. By the time I was 20 something, I had some strong decisions to make that weighed heavy on my heart. This led me to a daily yoga practice, study, work and about 15 years later to my husband Amit. His family's Guru Dada J.P. Vaswani from the Sadhu Vaswani Mission in Pune, India came once a year to the New York/New Jersey area where I live. I was lucky enough to meet with Dada when he came to town, invite my friends to meet him plus support Dada's events in my area in anyway I could. I felt privileged and honored to be so close to a holy man such as Dada.

As the years went by I was asked to do a little more. I always jumped to it because all I saw was good when it came to Dada and the Mission. The Mission was aware of my blog Glamorous Yogini and asked me to write a post about Forgiveness. It was explained to me that August 2nd is Dada's birthday and it is his wish at 2pm wherever you are in the world on that day for 2 minutes to reflect on forgiving someone. This day has become Global Forgiveness Day. Imagine this wave of positivity! Sadly I was not able to write that Forgiveness post. I remember writing to my friends at The Sadhu Vaswani Mission saying I was sorry and was practicing forgiving myself for not doing it. I share this with you because finding forgiveness is not easy. Having this feeling to push forgiving another to the side is a very human and real response.

I eventually came to learn the power that comes with embodying the teaching of forgiveness. This enabled me to write about forgiveness and I now find it to be an easier topic to ponder. I say this after meeting Dada several years ago. Here he told me it is very important to forgive if you are looking to transform and move forward in your life. If you don't forgive you carry a heavy burden within your heart. A wound that hurts only one person and that person is you. Your peace and happiness is waiting for you. You have a choice to find it if you let go.

Fortunately Dada has written countless books on the topic plus there's YouTube clips you can listen to. I hope this personal account has inspired you to participate in finding forgiveness this coming Friday August 2nd at 2pm for 2 minutes. Please visit momentofcalm.org to learn more about Global Forgiveness Day.

Meeting a Master: Dada J.P. Vaswani

A couple of weeks before my wedding to Amit, it so happened that his Father's Guru, Dada J.P. Vaswani from the Sadhu Vaswani Mission in Pune, India was in the New York/New Jersey area. He was scheduled to speak at several venues and I was looking forward to attending these events which included Dada leading a meditation at The Town Hall in New York City. I was honored when Amit said Dada was coming over to his parent's house to bless us as a couple.

I previously attended events in Manhattan where Gurus were present but I never had a face to face meeting before. I was a bit nervous but at the same time thrilled. Being raised Catholic I was accustomed to getting dressed up for special holy events so I made sure not to wear my yoga teaching work clothes but to change into a simple summer dress with a light scarf in case I needed to cover my head and shoulders. I had no idea and was guessing what was appropriate. Amit insisted not to worry about these details. He encouraged me to simply show up and enjoy.

I arrived at my soon to be in-Law's house and the suburban streets were covered with parked cars. This was not typical nor was the crowd of people in the house. The floors were covered with white sheets and everyone was wearing white except for me and Amit. I was overwhelmed with hugs and kisses and words of Congratulations for my upcoming wedding. Eventually Dada arrived and all eyes turned towards him. It was hard not to stare at him. He's a luminous being. He entered with his assistant Krishna Kumari by his side and about 10 other people. I heard a tambourine, people bowed as he walked by while a photographer filmed his every move. Things got quiet and cameras were turned off when Dada sat with Amit and I where he meditated with us, blessed us and mantras were repeated.

What touched my soul was Dada looked at me and quietly told me something I was thinking about the day before. I told no one about these thoughts. How did he know? He continued to look at me and told me something I was thinking about when I was a teenager. Then he told me something I would think about in the future and as I'm writing this exactly ten years later he is correct. He was able to know my past, present and my future mind. Not in a way that anyone ever did before. He continued to look at me. This time there were no words. Rather a feeling of unconditional love came from him. I was in awe that he was able to look at my mind with all its thoughts including the confused ones and he continued to send me unconditional love. I never felt this feeling before. It was an incredible feeling that was healing my heart. When I looked back at Dada I loved everyone including myself. I imagined this must be what heaven feels like. After our meeting I remember trying to hold onto this high frequency love vibration. Life and its challenges sure does make it rough to always embody loving thoughts, words and actions. The beauty of spending time with a Master like Dada is I have the memory of this feeling in my heart. It's a feeling that I visit often to stay soft and approach my life with an open and brave heart.

I'm sharing this personal memory of Dada J. P. Vaswani because July 12th is the sacred day a year ago he dropped his physical body at the age of 99. I'm so grateful to have had magical healing moments with Dada. Above is a picture of our last face to face meeting on September 13, 2017. I will be posting more photos and tributes in the coming weeks up to his birthday August 2nd which is observed as Global Forgiveness Day. Please visit momentofcalm.org and sadhuvaswani.org to learn more.

New Moon, New Vinyasa Yoga Flow

Tuesday July 2nd's New Moon is a Total Solar Eclipse. A day where the Moon covers the Sun's light for a few minutes. This lack of light show will be visible in the South Pacific, southern Chile and Argentina. I once asked a spiritual teacher named Alexander Murray, what it means spiritually to experience an eclipse? He said "Imagine water moving through a creek and its path being blocked. The water doesn't stop moving. It finds another way through." I love his simplistic and profound answer.

Every New Moon I bring new yoga flow choreography into all my classes. The postures vary from month to month while some postures are repeated from the months prior. What can be expected is classical yoga postures and exercises to get into them that are strung together in such a way to stimulate your mind and body to be in the present moment while developing both strength and flexibility. I teach a variety of Yoga class levels including body sculpting classes called Creative Core Conditioning

I hope to see you this summer on the mat at:

The Creative Path

Creating content be it choreographing a yoga flow, designing a yoga workshop, creating a flower mandala or preparing dinner for my family is art to me because to create I access what's deep within my consciousness and name it as something. A yoga selfie, a post on my blog and that perfectly sautéed assortment of veggies always comes from deep practice and meditation. Once it's created it is there to be seen and experienced.

As the days grow warmer and nature's blossoming inspires so much creativity, I felt it was time to go through my photo files to motivate my current creations. I hope you enjoy the photos I'm sharing and feel to dig deep and take the creative path.

Beltane: The May Day Holiday

Garudasana/Eagle Pose Variation

Beltane, the May Day holiday is a festival of love, fire, flowers and fairies. It is the shift from spring to early summer. A time to acknowledge what you are passionate about and start taking those bigger steps towards it. That may mean stepping into a little radical action. Where you don't only visualize what you want but you also let go of a few things in your life to have the room to move closer towards the life you've always dreamt of.

The fire aspect of this holiday which embodies the energies of passion and transformation may help you in the letting go to grow process. On this day, April 30th (May Eve) ancient Celtic people would extinguish their hearth fires then relight the fire in the morning from a community bonfire. This ritual signified letting go of the old and igniting the new. You could do your version of this ritual by lighting a candle tonight then blowing it out while holding the intention of what you are letting go of. Tomorrow morning relight that same candle while visualizing your next steps forward.

There's so much more to Beltane, the May Day Holiday like the symbol of the Green Man, representing the God of the woods and all growing things. For the next 2 months we will energetically dance with the Green Man, the May Queen, the fey and all we are inviting into our life. We will explore how to grow more mindful of our environment and create together so much beauty. We will make flower crowns, flower mandalas, yoga flows and meditations that will heal your soul and raise the energy of all that surrounds us.

I'll be posting my early summer offerings on the blog soon. In the meantime please connect to me on Instagram @allisonegandatwani where I post more frequently. Peace, Practice and Love, Allison

Flower Power Healing Meditation

Stretch the beauty of your springtime blossoms out just a little bit more before they fade by making a flower petal mandala. Taking the time to sit and create with nature's mandala, a flower, reminds you of the great beauty, strength and grace that's always around you in the natural world. The time it took for these flowers to blossom is no different from your efforts to create that fab presentation for work, cook that delicious holiday dinner or show up on your yoga mat this morning. We are all creators, creating different things to contribute to the good of this magical and equally difficult world.

If you are looking to blossom, pick what your heart desires and with this intention sit with a flower or two. Pull off each petal and place them down into a pattern. Notice what you see, feel and how time disappears. You can add crystals, shells, pebbles or glitter. There is no right way to do this. Simply allow your concentration on the flower help you to dive deeper into yourself. Notice the loveliness unfold.

Sunday June 9th at ROCA/Rockland Center of the Arts in West Nyack, New York I will be creating a Flower Power Healing Mandala that you just may want to experience. Details are coming soon! Happy Spring and Super Moon!

Today's Full Moon is the last of the 3 powerful Super Moons we've had since the beginning of the year. Today is also the Vernal Equinox, the 1st day of Spring which means plenty of growth and change is on its way. Allow this transformative energy to move through your mind, body, heart and soul. For the next 2 months plant your seeds, clean your closets and let in the light and fresh air. This is a time to see your projects grow while balancing letting the kid inside of you out to play. Enjoy watching the earth and yourself awaken.

This Spring March 4th to a Fit and Fearless You-March Schedule

It's three months into the New Year and with Spring coming around the corner it's time to revisit your New Year's wishes. In some way it must have included reducing stress in your life. How do you get rid of stress? Cortisol? That stress hormone. Start by moving your body and exercising.

When I'm practicing yoga and or exercising fitness style my neck and shoulders loosen, my lower back feels free and my mind slows down. With all this space and freedom moving through me, I'm smiling again, feeling confident and floating on a cloud watching my thoughts and emotions move like clouds passing by.

It's time to get to know your body and take care of it so you can have an inner body healing experience. Practicing yoga and exercising regularly releases stressful emotional blocks and makes your energy move freely throughout you. When you move, you heal yourself, feel good and then you're ready to experience what's next in a calm manner.

Here's my teaching schedule. I hope I can see you on the mat!

Valentine's Day Couple's Yoga at Birchwood Center

This past weekend I led the Valentine's Day Couple's Yoga event at Birchwood Center in Nyack, New York. It was such a joy seeing students I know and their loved ones, who were ages 10 and up practicing yoga together. I could feel the love and healing in the room. There were many moments that touched my heart as I witnessed the partners express patience, respect and compassion towards one another as they moved into postures, held the postures and moved out of them together.

The most significant teaching of Couple's Yoga is that it takes the spotlight off of yourself when you practice and notice how to relate with greater mindfulness towards your partner. This looking outside of yourself and yoga mat is a powerful practice that hopefully will bring more love into your relationship and our world.

The next time we offer this event please consider giving it a try and do check into www.birchwoodcenter.com for all the wonderful events they host. Also Rebecca Kittle shown above back bending with me was the most perfect teacher's assistant. I'm so grateful and honored! I hope to see you at the next event!

January"s Yoga and Creative Core Conditioning Class Schedule

Happy New Year! Now that we are a couple of weeks into the New Year I'm feeling good about following through with my New Year's wishes to prioritize a little more me time while balancing my family life and daily teachings. Making self care time means some big lifestyle changes. At first it sounds easy enough to do but once you get started it really does require some serious letting go of old ways to blossom a little differently in 2019. I envision myself being successful as I set my morning alarm before the roosters start singing and going to bed shortly after my youngest son. I hope your New Year's wishes come true and add onto your greatness in 2019.

If you're looking to prioritize self care, stepping into a yoga studio to practice is always a positive move. I'm teaching weekly classes at both Birchwood Center for Yoga and Massage in Nyack, New York and Bamboomoves Yoga in Englewood, New Jersey. I hope to see you on the mat! Here's my weekly class schedule.
