Mindfulness Exercise: Noticing Signs of Spring

Parsvottanasana/Extreme Side Stretch Pose Backbend Variation

Virabhadrasana 1/Warrior 1 Pose Humble Warrior Variation

Virabhadrasana 3/Warrior 3 Pose

Seeing shamrocks pushing their way up through mud, cherry blossoms cracking open on tree's bare bones and ice on water moving are signs in greater New York City area that are proving that spring is coming. Lately I've been practicing not getting stuck in only noticing dirty snow on the side of the road and putting on the same old bulky coat everyday by acknowledging the growing number of birds in the sky hauling warmer weather behind them along with seeing other signs of spring that are surfacing.

My suggestion in breaking the inertia that comes with a cold winter's hibernation is to snap pictures of what you see has changed and/or write notes on your phone. When you're done, review what you've collected and align yourself with the energies that you're noticing. I've been doing this and I'm finding I'm adding light and airy balance poses into my daily yoga practice, in addition to giving away what I don't need plus attuning to spring's sacred truths of hope, harmony and prosperity. As a result I'm feeling pretty good and balanced. Try this mindfulness exercise and notice the signs of spring emerging around and within you.

Enlighten Your Arms Special Spring Equinox Class

Although it doesn't feel like early spring's bloom is right around the corner in the Northeast, it is. In a few weeks, life's daily schedule will come out of hibernation and move at a faster beat. Ground and de stress by attuning to Mother Nature via resting your hands onto the earth with yoga postures such as arm balances and restorative shoulder openers. Slowing down and noticing from a ground's eye view will recharge your energy both physically and emotionally as well as prepare you for the season of growth that is ahead.

In this special class we will:

Move through an innovative vinyasa yoga flow that will prepare and focus your mind body awareness on arm balancing.

Understand how a balanced combination of space and ease coupled with detail and energy is required when practicing arm balances.

Learn how to contract the muscles needed in poses like chaturanga, crow pose and wheel pose so the muscles that commonly tense up and later feel neck and shoulder pain will be at ease.

Develop posture awareness where you can check in at any moment and improve it.

Restore your neck and shoulders in soothing restorative yoga postures while being guided through a breath exercise and into meditative rest.

Some yoga experience is recommended.

Heal and Expand Your Heart's Energy

The heart like the brain, generates a powerful electromagnetic field. The heart has the largest electromagnetic field in the body. Scientists have proven this by measuring the heart's electric field in an electrocardiogram (ECG). Here the heart's electric field is about 60 times greater in size than brain waves that were recorded in an electroencephalogram (EEG).*

Energetic fields can be felt, especially when you're close to others. Heart energy wants to mingle with other energies and possibly synchronize with one another. Since your heart's vibration touches those around you, notice when your heart's energy is shut down and depressed. It maybe because people around you are heavy hearted or you are creating the heavy energy therefore that is all you are attracting. This is why being in a joyful person's presence uplifts your mood. When you have positive vibes streaming out from your heart center, gratitude and joy is all you sense and magnetize.

From my personal/professional experience you can work towards healing heart dis-ease if you take the time daily to sit and ground while facing either the sun, moon, stars or candlelight. You can also do this while in a yoga pose. Here breathe in light and exhale worry, blame, tightness and other densities within your mind and body away. See the light you're inhaling in as a bright green mist entering you and energizing your heart's energy center.

If possible please join me Saturday February 21st at 1p for 2 1/2 hours for my Deepen Your Backbends Yoga workshop at Ramapo College of New Jersey. Visit my site's side bar and click into the workshop for more details.

An Introduction to Glamorous Yogini

This spring I'm celebrating 4 years since starting my blog "Glamorous Yogini." Initially it was a post pregnancy outlet for me to get a few modern yogini lifestyle thoughts out there on the great big cyber cloud. However this little venture has grown into bringing me into a new realm of healing and sharing yoga. What stands out most is my new relationship with myself and with countless like minded, earth loving and evolving people. The collaborations I've been a part of have inspired me to not stop sharing anytime soon as there is fertile ground to plant seeds on for the future of yoga, beauty and preserving our natural world. Yet at the same time Glamorous Yogini has received some smirks and confusion on it's name, so I've written a new side bar page on my site for some "What is in my name?"clarification.

An Introduction to Glamorous Yogini:

I'm Allison Egan Datwani. Welcome to my personal yoga lifestyle blog. I've been practicing and teaching yoga for over twenty years. Despite being taught by my teachers to renounce most of life's material pleasures to attain a few glimpses of illumination, I've come to learn living a monk's life made me feel grey both inside and out. After plenty of self study and getting real with myself, I've come to live my life following my truth, knowing that plenty of what my teachers said is true. Especially the teaching that one needs to cultivate an ease with letting go to live a yoga life. With this being said, the truth of impermanence is where my blog's name Glamorous Yogini came from. Let me explain.

The beauty loving side of me has made a peace with admiring and adorning myself with all things alluring as long as my lipsticks to lotions are cruelty free and my clothing is creatively coordinated with reused and ethically made clothing. Fair trade plants and flowers plus reclaimed interior design catches my attention while yoga and all things related to yoga like delicious organic vegetarian food satisfies me to the core. However the challenge is seeing beauty when everything that seems real like a marriage, home, job, health and so forth falls apart.

This blog is my way of sharing what inspires my healing to achieve wholeness as I move through the good, bad and neutral periods of life. The essence of Glamorous Yogini is seeing the goodness and greatness of it all. This vision is not to brush over the tragedies of life but rather to give light to the grace within them. So if you love beauty, nature and yoga's wisdom then Glamorous Yogini is for you. There's one catch to being a Glamorous Yogini, as soon as you receive something fabulous you are equally ready to give something away.
